In the middle of the gyratory system is a pub called 'Ye Olde Swiss Cottage'. However this is not where the area gets its name from, which was a Swiss Cottage called the 'Cottage Grill' which was located nearby in the mid 1900's. Hampstead itself can trace its history back to 7000bc when a group of Mesolithic forest hunters settled in the area. The doomsday book of 1086 records a location called 'Hamestede' which was centred on a small farm. Hampstead remained an agricultural area through to the 17th century and it wasn't until the 1800's however with the arrival of the railway that Hampstead began to grow into what we see it as today.
